PCOS: Hopes for a cure in the future.

Updated: Oct 25, 2024

PCOS stands to be one of the most common hormonal disorders in women of today's world and the numbers keep on increasing. The condition is such that it not only affects one's physical well being but also affects their emotional, mental and social well being due to the manifestation of the syndrome into multiple symptoms not only restricted to hormonal imbalances. The range of symptoms also seem to mimic multiple other conditions that makes it difficult for the diagnosis of the condition and hence most of the women go undiagnosed. Despite the increase in the number of cases of PCOS, a cure to the same seems to be unavailable as of now and is a challenge considering the fact that multiple women across the globe affected by it would lead a better life only if there was a cure for it. This also leads to doctors prescribing birth control as the first line of treatment in most cases which multiple women are not very keen to follow.

Apart from these challenges the prevalence of the condition is aggrevated by multiple new age factors such as immense mental and physical stress due to career and academics, rise in environmental pollutants that lead to disruption of hormones and a sedentary lifestyle.

There are numerous challenges posed by the condition but advances in technology such as application of pattern recognition by Artificial intelligence to detect polycystic ovaries in ultrasounds seems to be indicative of progress of diagnosis of PCOS. Research in this field seems to be increasing with results that discover multiple phytochemicals that can relieve the symptoms of the disease, some reports are suggestive of Ketogenic diet and Mediterranean diet being helpful in managing the condition. Other than that multiple health professionals have started to specialize in PCOS and are now providing guidance and help by curating workouts, diet plans and informative content about the condition on social.

PCOS is understood to be an incurable condition but if the advances in science and research in the field of PCOS are continued discovery of a cure for the same won't be unlikely.
